Alpenglow Partner Kylee Glaser shares her personal experiences from years of attending the Kentucky Derby
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of attending the Kentucky Derby in ways few ever get to. The pageantry, the tradition, the electricity of the crowd—it never gets old. What truly elevated my experiences was the opportunity to step beyond the grandstands and into the heart of Churchill Downs: The Stakes Room, Millionaires Row, the Finish Line Suite, private paddock tours, jockey meet-and-greets and even standing in the Winner’s Circle. Here’s a look back at the moments that made the Derby unforgettable.

The Stakes Room: Refined Views and Unmatched Energy
The Stakes Room is a hidden gem—elegant in every way, from the culinary offerings to the sweeping views of the track. It’s an intimate space where longtime Derby-goers and racing enthusiasts gather in style. Think: refined service, expertly-mixed cocktails, and the perfect vantage point to experience the Derby’s electric pace without the overwhelming crowds. It’s one of my favorite ways to take in the races— comfortable, refined, and deeply connected to the action.

Millionaires Row: Southern Hospitality at Its Finest
For those who love tradition wrapped in luxury, Millionaires Row offers the quintessential Derby experience. The ambiance is vibrant and sophisticated, with white tablecloths, floral centerpieces, and guests dressed to the nines. It's more than a place to watch the races—it's where old-money elegance meets modern celebration. Between gourmet food, flowing champagne, and nonstop people-watching, Millionaires Row delivers an unforgettable blend of high society and Kentucky charm.

Finish Line Suite: Front-Row Thrill
For pure adrenaline, nothing compares to watching from the Finish Line Suite. It’s where the thunder of hooves is most intense, and where every photo finish is a heart-pounding moment. From this view, you see the race as the jockeys see it—charging toward history at 37 miles per hour.
Paddock Tours & Jockey Meet & Greets: The Human Side of the Sport
Walking through the paddock before the race is like being backstage at a Broadway show. There’s nervous energy, fierce focus, and sheer beauty in these horses and their trainers. Through private tours, I got a glimpse into this pre-race ritual—and even had the chance to meet the jockeys, whose skill and grit define the sport. Shaking hands with these athletes and hearing their stories brought a whole new appreciation for the tradition and discipline behind every ride.

Winner’s Circle: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment
Standing in the Winner’s Circle was surreal. To witness the crowning moment up close—the flowers, the roar of the crowd, the joy (and relief) on the owner’s face—it’s pure magic. Few ever get that close to greatness, and I’ll never forget what it felt like to be there.
Mint Juleps, Hats, and Handicapping
Of course, no Derby experience is complete without a proper mint julep and a statement hat. I’ve sipped countless juleps over the years—some better than others—but all shared with people who live for this moment. And thanks to time spent learning from seasoned handicappers, I’ve even managed to cash a few tickets. Watching a race you’ve wagered on, with a little knowledge under your belt, adds a new level of excitement—and a whole lot of shouting.

The Fashion & Famous Faces of the Derby
The Kentucky Derby isn’t just a horse race—it’s a runway, a red carpet, and a social scene rolled into one. Year after year, I’ve marveled at the fashion statements: bold prints, seersucker suits, custom fascinators, and of course, those iconic oversized hats. It’s a place where tradition meets flair, and the bolder, the better.
Celebrity sightings are a sport of their own. I’ve brushed shoulders with actors, musicians, athletes, and even royalty. From the likes of Tom Brady and Jennifer Lawrence to fashion icons and chart-topping performers, the Derby draws a crowd as dazzling as the race itself. It’s always fun to see who makes an appearance and how they interpret Derby style—some traditional, others completely unexpected, but always unforgettable.
Where to Stay: Luxe Retreats & Local Gems
Where you stay during Derby week can make or break the experience. I’ve had the chance to explore a variety of accommodations—from luxury hotels to private estates—and here are some of my personal favorites and where we have clients stay:
The Brown Hotel – Historic, elegant, and located in the heart of Louisville. It’s a Derby institution and home to the famous Hot Brown sandwich. Great for those who want luxury with a classic Kentucky twist.
21c Museum Hotel – A boutique hotel meets contemporary art gallery. It’s hip, stylish, and always buzzing during Derby week. The perfect choice for those who want a blend of culture and comfort.
Rental Homes & Luxe Condos – For larger groups or those seeking privacy, high-end home rentals can offer space, exclusivity, and often come with perks like private chefs or backyard Derby parties. Just book early—they go fast.
Each visit to the Derby has been more than just a bucket-list event—it’s been a deep dive into a cultural tradition, a celebration of athleticism, and a masterclass in hospitality. Whether you’re in the grandstands or behind the scenes, there’s something undeniably magical about Churchill Downs in May.
I'm looking forward to the next one—hat in hand, julep in the other.
