Hotel Highlight – Naviva, Four Seasons

In early May, I had the opportunity to do a site visit of Naviva, a Four Seasons’ concept comprising 15 tented bungalow rooms about five minutes away from the Four Seasons Punta Mita. Located on a private 48-acre peninsula at the tip of Punta Mita, near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Naviva feels like a high-luxury African safari camp combined with a romantic wellness retreat.
I’ve had Naviva on my radar since I first heard whispers of a new Luxury Frontiers property. Luxury Frontiers is an architectural firm from South Africa, best known for designing the tents at Amangiri in Utah, Nayara Tented Camp in Costa Rica, and King’s Pool camp in Botswana. I’ve loved all their properties, and was thrilled to hear a new project was in the works, especially one partnered with Four Seasons.
With just 15 bungalows with sweeping ocean views from private decks and secluded plunge pools, the closest thing I’ve found to Naviva is Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. There is a quiet that envelopes you from the moment you step foot on the forested pathways meandering throughout the property.
While there were certainly other people there, it felt like everyone was in their own little world.
Activities
At Naviva, there are no fixed schedules or pre-set menus. All your activities are included, so if you feel like changing your mind from a fishing excursion to a cocktail-making class that afternoon, you are free to follow your fancy.
Much like the White Lotus in Thailand of TV fame, you are paired with a personal guide to help you plan your stay. Take your pick of activities, from soul-soothing Temezcal ceremonies to painting classes and snorkeling safaris.
For a romantic evening, they can set up a beachside dinner on the private beach below the cliffs of the resort. The journey of your stay is entirely personalized to you, allowing you to really relax and take each day at a time.
With extensive hiking trails throughout the property and up the hillside behind it, you can find the sweeping views entirely to yourself. The name “Naviva” comes from a mixture of “Naturaleza” and “Viva,” or “nature” and “life.” Naviva is focused on helping you center yourself and find peace in nature. Custom sound healing and meditation at sunset on the yoga deck are favorites of travelers looking for a wellness journey.
Rooms
Each room feels like its own private resort. There are 10 Ocean-View Bungalows and 5 Ocean-View Grand Bungalows – with the main difference being that the Grand Bungalows have a firepit and seating for more outdoor space.
Enjoy an outdoor shower, take a long soak in your deep tub with an ocean view, read a book from your hammock while listening to the waves, catch the sunset from your private pool, or take an afternoon snooze from the couch in the screened-in porch where a vintage cocktail setup makes you feel like you’re in colonial Africa.
The living room and bedrooms are air-conditioned, so you can sleep well in the middle of your wild refuge.
There are no televisions in the rooms as Naviva invites guests to truly disconnect.

Dining
The cuisine at Naviva is farm-to-table, with the goal of highlighting local ingredients. If you’re not feeling like socializing, you can dine on the deck of your private tent beneath a canopy of stars. At each meal in the main restaurant, Copal Cocina, the chef proposes a dish each day that best matches what has been growing in the garden.
We were welcomed to our site visit with a tray of homemade pineapple kombucha in frosty classes with a slice of dried pineapple. I’m not kidding when I say these drinks were life-changing. I’ve been googling how to make kombucha ever since.

Rates
Naviva offers all-inclusive rates, so your meals and drinks are included. The food is all locally-sourced, and they have an open kitchen concept where you can make yourself a drink any time you feel like one.
Now, let’s get to the question I know you’re begging to ask – Naviva’s price tag is steep, is it worth it? With rates starting at $3,950 – $4,250+ for most of the year and climbing for festive weeks, Naviva is not going to be in everyone’s price range. Previously, I had a hard time justifying how we could ever make the trek to visit for a meaningful length of time at that price point.
However, after visiting, I realized a couple of important aspects of these rates:
1) They are all-inclusive, which covers all meals, snacks and drinks, one 60-minute spa treatment per guest, daily practices and rituals and Unscripted Naviva experiences.
2) As a Preferred Partner Alpenglow Travel guest, you also receive complimentary roundtrip airport transfers for two (USD 330 value), a complimentary upgrade to a Ocean-View Grand Bungalow (depending availability), and early check-in / late check-out.
3) Being so close to the Four Seasons Punta Mita, you can escape for one or two days of quiet at Naviva, and then spend the rest of your stay at the main resort when you are ready for a bit of a livelier atmosphere.
